day 143 - Something cool...

I heard about this the other evening while having dinner with friends (and was actually quite surprised there isn't more on the web about it... yet). It's called Smart Glass,.. glass that literally 'switches' from totally clear, to fully opaque-- I *think* it has something to do with an electrical charge to the gas it's filled with.

No matter, I thought it was cool, too cool not to share. (Well that, and creative thinking is all about always being curious and seeking out new things/experiences/etc.)
Take care,

day 142 - Another great whiteboard talk...

A great little talk by Steve Johnson-- around the idea of his new book, 'Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation'.

This reminds me of a diagram I did a while back around fostering creativity in the work environment. As soon as I'd finished it, I realized the real challenges involved. Perhaps I'll share that next and chat about my thoughts around that.

Until then-- enjoy this.

day 141 - 'My Favorite..

I don't know how many of you out there will get this reference (it's something I doodled a few years ago when I first started seeing folks wearing their bluetooth headsets {to the store, to the movies, to dinner,.. EVERYWHRE!!}) BUT, when I was a kid there was a show called 'My Favorite Martian', and,.. well, I'll just leave it at that-- If you recall the show I think you'll get this reference/image.

How's this relate to creativity? Well,.. this may be a stretch but it's about connecting different/disparate ideas no?

And, if not, at least I thought it was kinda funny so I thought I'd share it.

Take care-

day 140 - 'Destination Unknown'

This piece wound up being really experimental-- As I was cleaning up (the table top /work-surface I was working on) from a prior piece I just started messing with all the 'leftovers'. The pigments and solvents-- I moved them around on the slick stainless steel surface, then laid a sheet of paper over, and burnished it down-- picking up the colors etc. It's essentially it's a mono-print. One thing I love about mono-prints is the texture,.. the other part is the 'surprise' (image) you get when you pull the paper. No matte what,.. it doesn't look like what you expect.

I especially like the vagueness-- the mystery of this image. That's part of the reason I'm calling it 'Destination Unknown'. The other part of why I'm calling it that is that I'm not sure if it's done or not,.. no I just can't quite tell yet. I'd better not mess with it any more tonight and sleep/dream on it.

Sleep well-
dave

ps-
If the video is any good I'll add it to this post later. I experimented with hanging the camera from the ceiling for a different angle-- no telling what I've got until I transfer it all and take a look.

day 140 - 'Permission'

Somewhere along the way I discovered one of the most important concepts of truly being creative
.. 'Permission'. If you think about it, it's critical to us truly, authentically being ourselves-- and this permission can only come from ourselves. Nobody else can (or will) give it to you.

Now, as simple as this may sound, I've recognized this to be deceptively difficult-- for myself and most other individuals who I have experienced as brave enough to be open and honest.

To keep it short,.. I'll share that I think this is due to years of being 'told' what to do, who to be, and how to be (behave). Certainly we can't all run-amuck doing anything we want,.. but trying to make us all fit the same mold (as most of our systems do, from schools to corporations)-- would make us,.. mediocre-- 'super-average' at best.

Just my 2¢ here-- but I think it plays right into why most folks don't consider themselves to be very creative.

Anyway-- I thought this image tells a good story.

ps-
I stumbled upon somewhere out there on the web-- at this point I can't recall where, but I'll share & give credit if I figure it out.

day 139 - Think BIGGER

Now-- on my way to 'think bigger' (as well as leverage my humble roots of re-use and recycle)

More to come....

day 138 - Element of surprise

Don't always give 'em what they're expecting.

Here's a great example...

I especially like the description they put on this one.
