For what it's worth... (day 109)

To mix it up a bit here's a link to another 'Creative' site.

This guy is little over the top for my tastes,.. Well, I'll just come out and say it-- A LOT over the top (not to mention seemingly quite pleased with himself) but I still think the site is worth a look if you haven't seen it.

Of course, I could be wrong,.. lord knows I often am. He's the one with a 'WallStreet Journal Best Seller' book and popular blog. Good for him,.. it's yet another great example of just what's possible out there in cyberspace.

Enjoy-

day 108 - Sorry

Sorry. Sorry in the sense that I didn't capture this one on video. I thought it would just be a quick, simple (and typical) charcoal sketch,.. but it wasn't. It was more about experimenting with those common materials... in a way I've never used them. I wound up adding solvent (delivered via paper towels, cotton balls, and steel wool) on top of charcoal-- which gave it this cool, fluid yet 'temporary' movement,.. the fluidity lasted just for a short while. I became distracted by this 'new' behavior... only to notice the paper (Canson Marker paper) was getting saturated with the charcoal. So, from there I knew I'd need more contrast-- so I brought in some white oil paint.

This one might be more about 'the discovery' rather then 'the image' - either way, I'll call it a success.

Goodnight-

day 105 - Often less is more

It's funny sometimes how it doesn't take much for something to come to life. Try to 'Get in and get out' quicker than you normally do... and you may be pleasantly surprised.

day 104 - Why Care?

Why would you care what anybody else thinks of what you create?

Think about it-- we (all) already get in our own way too much as it is when it comes to expressing ourselves (no matter what form of expression it is),.. then as if that's not enough, we put 'others' in between us and our creative expression as well!?!! Simply stated WTF!? Why would you care,..? Why would you give others that kind of power over you, your behavior, or how you choose to explore the world?

I have loads of opinion and belief as to why this may be.. but not time or space to get into it right now. However, I will sum it all up by saying I think it's entirely self-limiting... and we should *NOT* do it!

day 104 - You don't have to like everything

You don't have to like everything you do. Come to think of it-- if you do you're probably not trying.
(However, don't be surprised if one of your works you *didn't* initially like,.. begins to grow on you. It happens to me a fair bit.. and it surprises me every time)

day 103 - Sometimes they actually listen!

So here's a great example of 'Something I NEVER imagined'.

A long long time ago in a land far away (from where I now live) I had a client I used to call 'Mr. Big'. He was an 'Idea-Man'. Quite a character, charmer, AND talker (bastard, he still owes me money!),.. always on the verge of the next BIG THING,.. Often talking of inventions and patents... huge [future] money,.. but mostly-- actual BIG things. These 'big things' were (almost always) thinly veiled marketing schemes he wanted to pitch to someone. Even though he was a GREAT talker, he needed something more than just his eloquent B.S. to pitch the kind of ideas he had his head. This is where I came in-- 'sketches'. Yes, you got it, 'sketches'. They turn 'things' from 'mere imaginings' inside of ONE individual's brain, into a simply (often crudely) executed drawing which gives the essential idea 'LIFE' that others can then easily 'See'.

Now, who could blame anyone given this kinda power (aka 'Me') for occasionally 'messing around' with the assignment.. and throwing in some ideas that were never actually asked for.. but were needed (even though they didn't know it ; ) even though they sounded kinda 'wacky' or 'off center' at the time?

Well, I won't bore you with the details (or my writing),.. but I will let the sketch and photo above tell the tale of what eventually became a 65' tall shining (now patina) grand example of a 'Something I never imagined'.

If you're ever in Atlanta-- swing by Buckheae and check out the 'Big Fish' at the Atlanta Fish Market. Oh,.. and please don't judge me for the final execution-- I just did the sketch that convinced them they should 'Do something different' than they had originally intended.

day 102 - One simple line...

Have you ever wondered where one simple action might take you if you simply committed to it and followed it through?

Here's a simple exercise for you to try. Just put your pen or pencil to paper and try drawing a simple object. e.g. a piece of fruit, wine bottle, anything in your view without lifting your pen. Follow that one line... watching,.. listening,.. and responding. Let it take you somewhere you've never been... possibly somewhere you've never even imagined.

Now that I think about it-- I'm convinced creativity is the perfect vehicle to take you places you'd never imagined. Why you ask? Well,.. it's directly from my personal experience. Let me dig around a bit, I'll share a few (of many) examples from my past that led me to places I could have NEVER imagined. C'mon back tomorrow and I'll have one ready for you.

Have another great day-
